Show up, do your job, etc.

I'm SURE I have quoted this before, but one of our seminary professors had a quote, "Show up, do your job, it ain't about YOU!" He said that if we followed that advice, all three, we'd be pastors, and disciples of Jesus.

In my current job, I am doing just that more than ever before. I don't always want to go visit at a hospital or hospice. I don't like the smell, I don't like the germs, and it's a lot of driving for a (usually short) visit. Anyway, all that being said, usually these days when I visit, I show up because it's my job. Because I'm supposed to, and I know that it will mean something to the people I go see. And almost always when I leave, I'm glad that I went.

It's like that with running too these days. I'm not crazy in love with running right now...it's freaking COLD for the South, I'm tired, it's still dark outside, and there are hills out there, I can't avoid 'em. Yet, I'm showing up, going for a run, and when I'm done, I'm almost always glad I went.

My job is technically not related to being a pastor -- any religion in my life is supposed to remain distant from the classroom. But I'm applying your advice: Show up, do your job, it ain't about YOU!" to my job these days. Usually I absolutely LOVE teaching, this semester no so much :)

Perhaps I should apply it to the running bit as well.

Hey, who was that, who said that? Was it Leland?

Nope, not Leland. Rudy F's brother, as I remember correctly.
